Etymology: L. fem. adj. adiacens, adjacent, indicating that this organism can grow as satellite colonies adjacent to other bacterial growth.

Note: The spelling of the specific epithet is adiacens in Abiotrophia adiacens (new combination) and adjacens in Streptococcus adjacens (basonym). Y. Kawamura et al. used adiacens because the IJSB editor recommended to use i instead of j.
