Abyssivirga Schouw et al. 2016, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Abyssivirga alkaniphila Schouw et al. 2016.
Etymology: L. gen. n. abyssi, from the deep; L. fem. n. virga, a rod; N.L. fem. n. Abyssivirga, a rod-shaped organism from the deep.
Valid publication: SCHOUW, A., LEIKNES EIDE, T., STOKKE, R., BIRGER PEDERSEN, R., HELENE STEEN, I. and BODTKER, G. 2016. Abyssivirga alkaniphila gen. nov., sp. nov., an alkane-degrading, anaerobic bacterium from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent system, and emended descriptions of Natranaerovirga pectinivora and Natranaerovirga hydrolytica. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 66, 1724-1734.

Note: Based on phylogenetic analyses, Postec et al. (2017) believe that the proposal of the new genus Abyssivirga should be reconsidered. They believe that Abyssivirga alkaniphila should be reassigned to the genus Vallitalea, possibly as a novel species, ‘Vallitalea alkaniphila’, if demonstrated by significant DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic differences.
