Type species: ¤ Acetobacterium woodii Balch et al. 1977 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. n. acetum, vinegar; L. neut. n. bacterium, rod; N.L. neut. n. Acetobacterium, vinegar rod.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. bakii, of Bak, named for F. Bak who isolated the first psychrotolerant homoacetogenic bacterium.

Note: According to Rules 27(3) and 30, Acetobacterium tundrae Simankova et al. 2001 is not validly published because, at the time of publication, the type strain was not deposited in two publicly accessible service collections in different countries [1]. In a Request for an Opinion, Euzéby and Tindall provide a solution whereby this name may be considered to be validly published [2].

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) C = ATCC 43740= DSM 1911 = JCM 2380 = LMG 7579.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. wieringae, of Wieringa; named for K. T. Wieringa who isolated and described Clostridium aceticum, the first known acetogenic bacterium.
