Notes:
1 Aeromonas bestiarum Ali et al. 1996 was previously known as Aeromonas hydrophila genomospecies 2.

[2] using MLST with the gyrB and rpoD genes among the genus Aeromonas, provided initial evidence for the clear phylogenetic divergence between these two species to warrant their remaining as separate species.

Note: Aeromonas caviae (ex Eddy 1962) Popoff 1984 should be a new combination (basonym: ¤ Aeromonas punctata subsp. caviae (Scherago 1936) Schubert 1964 (Approved Lists 1980) rather than a new species as indicated in the Validation List no. 15 and in the paper by Popoff 1984.

Note: Aeromonas caviae (ex Eddy 1962) Popoff 1984, ¤ Aeromonas punctata (Zimmermann 1890) Snieszko 1957 (Approved Lists 1980) and ¤ Aeromonas punctata subsp. caviae (Scherago 1936) Schubert 1964 (Approved Lists 1980) have the same type strain and therefore are homotypic synonyms (Rule 24a). Notes:
1 On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis Aeromonas enteropelogenes Schubert et al. 1991 was found identical to ¤ Aeromonas trota Carnahan et al. 1992 [1]. DNA-DNA hybridization studies are necessary in order to determine the genospecific relationship between these two species [2]. 3 Huys et al. 2002 wrote: "Although the species name A. enteropelogenes has nomenclatural priority, the authors would like to discourage the use of this name because the name A. trota has been cited much more frequently. The preferential use of A. trota in future publications may be the best option to avoid ambiguity in the description of ampicillin-susceptible aeromonads and to secure nomenclatural continuity in Aeromonas literature. ... To this end, it is anticipated that other workers may find additional arguments in order to formulate a Request for an Opinion from the Judicial Commission to overrule nomenclatural priority." The proposal by Huys et al. 2002 contravenes Rules 24(b) and 55. As long as a Request for an Opinion is not published and as long as the proposal by Huys et al. 2002 is not approved by the Judicial Commission, authors who consider Aeromonas enteropelogenes and ¤ Aeromonas trota to be synonyms must use the earlier synonym, Aeromonas enteropelogenes instead of ¤ Aeromonas trota.

Note: On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis [1], DNA-DNA hybridization [2] and phenotypic data [2], Aeromonas ichthiosmia Schubert et al. 1991 seems a later heterotypic synonym of ¤ Aeromonas veronii Hickman-Brenner et al. 1988. Consequently, the Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Vibrionaceae (1999) decided to clarify this problem [3]. Later, another DNA relatedness data contradicted the previous results and according to Esteve et al. [4] the synonymy beetwen Aeromonas ichthiosmia and ¤ Aeromonas veronii should be reconsidered.

2 The original spelling of the specific epithet has been corrected by Trüper and De' Clari 1997 to tructi (L. n. tructus i, trout) [1]. However, in the paper by Carnahan et al., the species name is derived both from the Greek adjective "trotos", meaning "vulnerable" and the modern Latin feminine adjective "trota" meaning "vulnerable". The name Aeromonas trota is therefore fully correct [2].

¤ Aeromonas enteropelogenes Schubert et al. 1991.

Notes:
1 On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis Aeromonas trota Carnahan et al. 1992 was found identical to ¤ Aeromonas enteropelogenes Schubert et al. 1991 [1]. DNA-DNA hybridization studies are necessary in order to determine the genospecific relationship between these two species [2]. According to the Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Vibrionaceae [3] and according to Huys et al. 2002 [4], Aeromonas trota is a later heterotypic synonym of ¤ Aeromonas enteropelogenes.

Original article in IJSEM Online
2 In the paper by Huys et al. 2002, ¤ Aeromonas enteropelogenes Schubert et al. 1991 is erroneously cited as Aeromonas enteropelogenes Schubert et al. 1990, and Aeromonas trota Carnahan et al. 1992 is erroneously cited as Aeromonas trota Carnahan et al. 1991.
3 Huys et al. 2002 [1] wrote: "Although the species name A. enteropelogenes has nomenclatural priority, the authors would like to discourage the use of this name because the name A. trota has been cited much more frequently. 2002 [1] contravenes Rules 24(b) and 55. As long as a Request for an Opinion is not published and as long as the proposal by Huys et al. 2002 is not approved by the Judicial Commission, authors who consider ¤ Aeromonas enteropelogenes and Aeromonas trota to be synonyms must use the earlier synonym, ¤ Aeromonas enteropelogenes instead of Aeromonas trota.
According to the Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Aeromonadaceae, Vibrionaceae and Related Organisms [2], a Request for an Opinion on this matter should undoubtedly be written in the future.

Notes:
1 This species encompasses two biovars (or biogroups), Sobria and Veronii. The proposal of the name Sobria is deprecated by the subcommittee on the taxonomy of Vibrionaceae, as this is the most common group in clinical material, yet it is indistinguishable phenotypically from the species ¤ Aeromonas sobria Popoff and Véron 1981. However, as a biovar designation, the name Sobria is not covered by the Bacteriological Code. Nevertheless, it is felt that the subcommittee should make a recommendation on this problem.

2 On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis [1], DNA-DNA hybridization [2] and phenotypic data [2], Aeromonas veronii Hickman-Brenner et al. 1988 seems an earlier heterotypic synonym of ¤ Aeromonas ichthiosmia Schubert et al. 1991. Consequently, the Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Vibrionaceae (1999) decided to clarify this problem [3]. Later, another DNA relatedness data contradicted the previous results and according to Esteve et al. [4] the synonymy beetwen ¤ Aeromonas ichthiosmia and Aeromonas veronii should be reconsidered.
