Azovibrio Reinhold-Hurek and Hurek 2000, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Azovibrio restrictus Reinhold-Hurek and Hurek 2000.
Etymology: N.L. n. azotum [from Fr. n. azote (from Gr. prep. a, not; Gr. n. zôê, life; N.Gr. n. azôê, not sustaining life)], nitrogen; N.L. pref. azo-, pertaining to nitrogen; L. v. vibro, to set in tremulous motion, move to and fro, vibrate; N.L. masc. n. vibrio, that which vibrates; N.L. masc. n. Azovibrio, nitrogen-fixing organism which vibrates.

Azovibrio restrictus Reinhold-Hurek and Hurek 2000, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) S5b2 = LMG 9099.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AF011346.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. restrictus, limited, restricted, referring to the restricted spectrum of carbon sources used for growth.
