Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").

Bacterionema Gilmour et al. 1961, genus.
Type species: ¤ Bacterionema matruchotii (Mendel 1919) Gilmour et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. n. bacter, a rod; Gr. neut. n. nêma, a thread; N.L. neut. n. Bacterionema, a thread-shaped (long) rod.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).

¤ Corynebacterium Lehmann and Neumann 1896 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note: Collins 1983 proposes to transfer  ¤ Bacterionema matruchotii (Mendel 1919) Gilmour et al. 1961 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Bacterionema, to the genus ¤ Corynebacterium as ¤ Corynebacterium matruchotii (Mendel 1919) Collins 1983, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Bacterionema to ¤ Corynebacterium.
