Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").
Caseobacter Crombach 1978, genus.
Type species: ¤ Caseobacter polymorphus Crombach 1978 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. n. caseus, cheese; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Caseobacter, cheese rod.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).
Original publication: CROMBACH (W.H.J.): Caseobacter polymorphus gen. nov., sp. nov., a coryne-form bacterium from cheese. International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology, 1978, 28, 354-366.
→ ¤ Corynebacterium Lehmann and Neumann 1896 (Approved Lists 1980).
Note: Collins et al. 1989 propose that ¤ Caseobacter polymorphus Crombach 1978 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Caseobacter, is a later heterotypic synonym of ¤ Corynebacterium variabile corrig. (Müller 1961) Collins 1987. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Caseobacter to ¤ Corynebacterium.
