Etymology: L. n. cavum, a cave (hole); L. fem. n. cella, a small room, a cell; N.L. fem. n. Cavicella, a cell from a cave (hole).

Etymology: L. fem. adj. subterranea, below the terrestrial ground, referring to the origin of the inoculum.
