Type species: ¤ Chondromyces crocatus Berkeley and Curtis 1874 (Approved Lists 1980).
Synonyms: "Polycephalum" Kalchbrenner and Cooke 1880, "Myxobotrys" Zukal 1896.
Etymology: Gr. n. chondros, cartilage; Gr. masc. n. mukês, mushroom or other fungus; N.L. masc. n. Chondromyces, cartilaginous fungus.

Etymology: L. masc. n. apex -icis; the extreme end of a thing, a projecting point or summit; N.L. masc. adj. apiculatus, pointed, with a tip or tail.

Etymology: L. dim. n. catenula, a small chain; L. masc. suff. -atus, suffix used in adjectives meaning provided with; N.L. masc. adj. catenulatus, with small chains (of sporangioles).
