Coprococcus Holdeman and Moore 1974, genus.
Type species: ¤ Coprococcus eutactus Holdeman and Moore 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. kopros, excrement, feces; N.L. masc. n. coccus (fromGr. n. kokkos) berry; N.L. masc. n. Coprococcus, fecal coccus.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).
Original publication: HOLDEMAN (L.V.) and MOORE (W.E.C.): New genus, Coprococcus, twelve new species, and emended descriptions of four previously described species of bacteria from human feces. International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology, 1974, 24, 260-277.

Coprococcus catus Holdeman and Moore 1974, species.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 27761= VPI C6-61.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB038359.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. catus (sic), clever, referring to unusual property of producing large quantities of both propionate and butyrate.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).

Note: The etymology provided by Holdeman and Moore is the following: L. adj. ca'tus clever [referring to the unusual property of producing large quantities of both propionic
and butyric acids]. However, in Latin, the adjective catus -a -um means: either sharp to the hearing, clear-sounding, shrill; or (in a good sense) clear-sighted, intelligent, sagacious, wise; or (in a bad sense) sly, crafty, cunning, artful.
