Type species: ¤ Cryptanaerobacter phenolicus Juteau et al. 2005.
Etymology: Gr. adj. kruptos, hidden; Gr. pref. an, not; Gr. n. aer aeros, air; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Cryptanaerobacter, an anaerobic rod that is hidden within the consortium.
