Etymology: L. pref. de, from, off, away; N.L. n. sulfis -itis, sulfite; L. neut. n. bacterium, rod; N.L. Desulfitobacterium, rod-shaped bacterium that reduces sulfite.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) Co23 = ATCC 700175= DSM 11544.

Etymology: Gr. adj. khloros, pale green; N.L. pref. chloro-, referring to the group VII element chlorine; L. v. respirare, to blow or breathe back; to breathe out, exhale; N.L. part. adj.chlororespirans, breathing chlorine, referring to the characteristic of coupling oxidation of electron donors to reductive removal of chlorines from various chlorophenolic compounds via a respiratory process used for obtaining energy for growth.

Etymology: L. n. metallum, the product of a mine (of gold, silver, iron, or stone), a metal; L. part. adj. reducens, leading back, bringing back and in chemistry converting to a different oxidation state; N.L. adj. metallireducens, reducing metal, referring to the ability to couple growth to respiration of several metals.
