Desulfuromonas Pfennig and Biebl 1977, genus. (Type genus of the order ¤ Desulfuromonadales corrig. Kuever et al. 2006; type genus of the family ¤ Desulfuromonadaceae corrig. Kuever et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Desulfuromonas acetoxidans Pfennig and Biebl 1977 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. fem. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Desulfuromonas, a monad that reduces sulfur.

Etymology: N.L. n. chloroethenum, chloroethene; L. fem. suff. -ica, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. chloroethenica, pertaining to chloroethene, as the organism utilizes such compounds as electron acceptors.
