(editors): Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, 1st ed., The Williams & Wilkins Co, Baltimore, 1923, pp. 1-442.

Notes:
1 According to Yabuuchi et al. 1979 [1], to Holmes and Owen 1979 [2] and to the ATCC, the CCUG, the DSMZ, the LMG, and the ARS (NRLL), the strain ATCC 10829= CCUG 1819 = DSM 30198 = LMG 4017 = NRRL B-54 is a strain of ¤ Sphingomonas paucimobilis (Holmes et al. 1977) Yabuuchi et al. 1990 [basonym ¤ Pseudomonas paucimobilis Holmes et al. 1977 (Approved Lists 1980)].
Yabuuchi et al. 1979 [1] and Homes and Owen 1979 [2] also indicate that the type strain of Flavobacterium  devorans which is currently in circulation does not correspond with the original strain. Holmes and Owen 1979 [2] wrote "We therefore consider that F. devorans should not be on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names when they are published on January 1,1980".
However, Flavobacterium devorans appears in the Approved Lists, and the rejection of the name Flavobacterium devorans, was never published in the IJSB/IJSEM.

Status of the named species of Flavobacterium. Request for an Opinion. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1979, 29, 416-426.
Original article in IJSEM Online
2 To date, the name Flavobacterium devorans is not placed on the list of rejected name (see above). Consequently, if the type strain of Flavobacterium devorans (Zimmermann 1890) Bergey et al. 1923 (Approved Lists 1980) is a strain of the genus ¤ Sphingomonas, then Flavobacterium devorans should be transfered in the genus ¤ Sphingomonas  as "Sphingomonas devorans" comb. nov. The epithet devorans [Flavobacterium devorans (Zimmermann 1890) Bergey et al. 1923 (Approved Lists 1980] has priority over the epithet paucimobilis [¤ Sphingomonas paucimobilis (Holmes et al. 1977) Yabuuchi et al. 1990]. So, if these two taxa are synonyms, then ¤ Sphingomonas paucimobilis  shoud be a later synonym of "Sphingomonas [Flavobacterium] devorans".
To avoid confusion, it should be useful that a Request for an Opinion and a Judicial Opinion be published in the IJSEM [see Rules 23a Note 4 (i), 56a, and 24c].
3 The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain shows an unexpected affiliation with the genus ¤ Sphingomonas (99.86% similarity against ¤ Sphingomonas paucimobilis).

Original article in IJSEM Online

Note: The Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision) [1] caters primarily for new names and new combinations and does not address the issue of changes in taxonomic opinion, particularly where an earlier synonym is considered to be the name that corresponds with the data. Gherna and Woese 1992 [2] showed that the type of the species Flavobacterium mizutaii does not group with the type of the genus Flavobacterium (¤ Flavobacterium aquatile) and is consistent with placement of this species in the genus ¤ Sphingobacterium, not in the genus Flavobacterium as proposed by Holmes et al. 1988 [3]. The inclusion of this organism in the genus ¤ Sphingobacterium is supported by the work of Takeuchi and Yokota 1993 [4], Bernardet et al. 1996 [6], Steyn et al. 1998 [7] and virtually all subsequent publications dealing with members of the genera ¤ Pedobacter and ¤ Sphingobacterium. Barry Holmes of the NCTC also accepts the inclusion of this organism in the genus ¤ Sphingobacterium (personal communication to Brian J. Tindall of the DSMZ). While the name that often appears in databases is Flavobacterium mizutaii this is not consistent with widely accepted and published current taxonomic opinion.

Note: It has become apparent that one of the culture collection certificates supplied in connection with this paper, provided by Zubair Aslam without the knowledge of the other authors, was not issued by the culture collection concerned; therefore evidence has not been provided that the type strain of Flavobacterium sasangense has been deposited in two culture collections in different countries, as required for valid publication of a species name under the Bacteriological Code. For this reason, this paper has been retracted.
