Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").
Frondicola Zhang et al. 2007, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Frondicola australicus Zhang et al. 2007.
Etymology: L. n. frons frondis, fallen leaves; L. masc. suffix -cola (from L. n. incola) inhabitant; N.L. masc. n. Frondicola, inhabitant of leaves, leaf dweller.
Valid publication: ZHANG (L.), XU (Z.) and PATEL (B.K.C.): Frondicola australicus gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from decaying leaf litter from a pine forest. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2007, 57, 1177-1182.

→ ¤ Frondihabitans Greene et al. 2009, gen. nov.
Note: The name Frondicola Zhang et al. 2007 is illegitimate because it is a later homonym of a fungal genus name Frondicola Hyde 1992 [Frondicola K.D. Hyde, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 110(2): 100 (1992)]. See Principle 2. Consequently, a new genus designation ¤ Frondihabitans Greene et al. 2009 has been proposed by Greene et al. 2009.

Frondicola australicus Zhang et al. 2007, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) E1HC-02 = DSM 17894 = JCM 13598.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: DQ525859.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. australicus, pertaining to Australia, from where the type strain was isolated.
Valid publication: ZHANG (L.), XU (Z.) and PATEL (B.K.C.): Frondicola australicus gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from decaying leaf litter from a pine forest. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2007, 57, 1177-1182.

Note: In the paper by Zhang et al. 2007, the GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain is erroneously cited as DQ52589.
→ ¤ Frondihabitans australicus (Zhang et al. 2007) Greene et al. 2009, comb. nov.
Note: Frondicola australicus Zhang et al. 2007 is illegitimate because the genus name is illegitimate (see ¤ Frondicola). Consequently, a new species designation ¤ Frondihabitans australicus (Zhang et al. 2007) Greene et al. 2009 has been proposed by Greene et al. 2009.
