Gemmatimonas Zhang et al. 2003, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Gemmatimonadales Zhang et al. 2003; type genus of the family ¤ Gemmatimonadaceae Zhang et al. 2003).
Type species: ¤ Gemmatimonas aurantiaca Zhang et al. 2003.
Etymology: L. adj. gemmatus, provided with buds; L. fem. n. monas, a unit; N.L. fem. n. Gemmatimonas, a budding unit.
