Halochromatium Imhoff et al. 1998, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Halochromatium salexigens (Caumette et al. 1989) Imhoff et al. 1998.
Recommended three-letter abbreviation: Hch. (see the file ¤ "Three-letter code for abbreviations of generic names").
Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; N.L. neut. n. Chromatium, a genus name; N.L. neut. n. Halochromatium, the Chromatium of the salt.
Valid publication: IMHOFF (J.F.), SÜLING (J.) and PETRI (R.): Phylogenetic relationships among the Chromatiaceae, their taxonomic reclassification and description of the new genera Allochromatium, Halochromatium, Isochromatium, Marichromatium, Thiococcus, Thiohalocapsa and Thermochromatium. Note: Imhoff et al. propose the new genera ¤ Allochromatium, Halochromatium, ¤ Isochromatium, ¤ Marichromatium, ¤ Thiococcus, ¤ Thiohalocapsa and ¤ Thermochromatium. The names Allochromatium (Gr. adj. allos, other) and Halochromatium (Gr. n. hals, salt) are from different sources but they can be homophones. Indeed, the "H" is not pronouced in some languages such in French, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian. Moreover, in Latin, the aspirated "H" has not always been used (see: Quintilian, Institutio Oratoria, Liber primus, 5: XIX, XX, and XXI). It has been employed at the beginning of the Latin civilization but lost as early as the end of the Republic (-27) even if some educated people have retained the aspirate till Aurelius Augustinus (354 - 430). Therefore, in the spoken language the names Allochromatium and Halochromatium can be a cause of uncertainty. The proposal of the name "Dissimilichromatium" (L. adj. dissimilis, different) for Allochromatium or the proposal of the name "Salichromatium" (L. n. sal, salt) for Halochromatium would allow to avoid confusion.
