Type species: ¤ Halopenitus persicus Amoozegar et al. 2012.
Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; L. masc. adj. penitus, inner, interior; N.L. masc. n. Halopenitus, intended to mean an archaeon isolated from an inland salt lake.

Halopenitus malekzadehii Amoozegar et al. 2013, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) CC65=IBRC-M 10418=KCTC 4045.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: KC018183.
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. malekzadehii, of Malekzadeh, named after Fereydoon Malekzadeh, a pioneer of microbiological science in Iran, who passed away in September 2012.
