Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; L. masc. adj. penitus, inner, interior; N.L. masc. n. Halopenitus, intended to mean an archaeon isolated from an inland salt lake.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. malekzadehii, of Malekzadeh, named after Fereydoon Malekzadeh, a pioneer of microbiological science in Iran, who passed away in September 2012.
