Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; Gr. adj. thermos, hot; Gr. fem. n. thrix, hair; N.L. fem. n. Halothermothrix, a thermophilic (fermentative) halophile.

Halothermothrix orenii Cayol et al. 1994, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) H168 = DSM 9562 = OCM 544.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: CP001098 (complete genome).
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. orenii, of Oren, named after Aharon Oren who has made important contributions to the knowledge of halophilic anaerobic bacteria.
