Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. Howardella, to honour the New Zealand microbiologist Bernard Howard, in recognition of his many contributions to anaerobic microbiology.

Etymology: N.L. n. urea, urea; Gr. adj. lutikos, able to dissolve; N.L. adj. lyticus -a -um (from Gr. adj. lutikos -ê -on), able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. fem. adj. ureilytica, urea dissolving.
