Type species: ¤ Jannaschia helgolandensis Wagner-Döbler et al. 2003.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Jannaschia, after the German microbiologist Holger W. Jannasch, one of the pioneers of marine microbiology, who had a tremendous impact on the field and was particularly devoted to studying microbial growth kinetics in sea water and the microbial ecology of hydrothermal vents.

¤ Thalassobacter stenotrophicus Macián et al. 2005.

Note: A polyphasic taxonomic approach reveals that the type strains of Jannaschia cystaugens Adachi et al. 2004 and ¤ Thalassobacter stenotrophicus Macián et al. 2005 were highly similar and should be considered members of the same species. According to Rules 15 and 17, Pujalte et al. 2005 propose the unification of the two species Jannaschia cystaugens and Thalassobacter stenotrophicus as Thalassobacter stenotrophicus.
Reference: PUJALTE (M.J.), MACIÁN (M.C.), ARAHAL (D.R.) and GARAY (E.): Thalassobacter stenotrophicus Macián et al. 2005 is a later synonym of Jannaschia cystaugens Adachi et al. 2004, with emended description of the genus Thalassobacter. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2005, 55, 1959-1963.
