Etymology: N.L. n. alkali, alkali (from Arabic article al, the; Arabic n. qaliy, ashes of saltwort), alkali; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. neut. adj. alkaliphilum, loving alkaline conditions.
