Levinea Young et al. 1971, genus.
Type species: ¤ Levinea amalonatica Young et al. 1971 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Levinea, named after Max Levine, an American bacteriologist.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).
Original publication: YOUNG (V.M.), KENTON (D.M.), HOBBS (B.J.) and MOODY (M.R.): Levinea, a new genus of the family Enterobacteriaceae. International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology, 1971, 21, 58-63.

¤ Citrobacter Werkman and Gillen 1932 (Approved Lists 1980).

Notes:
1 Brenner and Farmer 1982 propose to transfer ¤ Levinea amalonatica Young et al. 1971 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Levinea, to the genus ¤ Citrobacter as ¤ Citrobacter amalonaticus (Young et al. 1971) Brenner and Farmer 1982, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Levinea to ¤ Citrobacter.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 8. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1982, 32, 266-268.
Effective publication: FARMER III (J.J.): The genus Citrobacter. In: M.P. STARR et al. (editors), The procaryotes, a handbook on habitats, isolation, and identification of bacteria. Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1981, p. 1140-1147.
2 Brenner and Farmer 1982 proposed that the type species of Levinea be transferred to the Citrobacter. These authors did not, however, make any proposal regarding the transfer of ¤ Levinea malonatica to either Citrobacter or another genus.
