Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Levinea, named after Max Levine, an American bacteriologist.

1 Brenner and Farmer 1982 propose to transfer ¤ Levinea amalonatica Young et al. 1971 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Levinea, to the genus ¤ Citrobacter as ¤ Citrobacter amalonaticus (Young et al. 1971) Brenner and Farmer 1982, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Levinea to ¤ Citrobacter.

2 Brenner and Farmer 1982 proposed that the type species of Levinea be transferred to the Citrobacter. These authors did not, however, make any proposal regarding the transfer of ¤ Levinea malonatica to either Citrobacter or another genus.

Etymology: Gr. prefix a, not; N.L. n. malonas -atis, malonate; L. fem. suff. -ica, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. malonatica, pertaining to malonate; N.L. fem. adj. amalonatica, not pertaining to malonate (i.e., not able to utilize malonate).
