Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) BSker3=JCM 31343=UNIQEM U1010.

Etymology: N.L. n. alkali, soda ash (from Arabic al-qalyi, the ashes of saltwort); N.L. adj. philus (from Gr. adj. philos, -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. fem. adj. haloalkaliphila, salt and alkali-loving.

Etymology: Gr. n. hals, halos, salt; Gr. adj. philos, loving; N.L. fem. adj. halophila, salt-loving, referring to the ability of the type strain to grow at high NaCl concentrations.
