Mariprofundus Emerson et al. 2010, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Mariprofundus ferrooxydans Emerson et al. 2010.
Etymology: L. n. mare -is, the sea; L. masc. adj. profundus, deep; N.L. masc. n. Mariprofundus (sic), intended to mean a deep-sea organism.

2 The generic name Mariprofundus does not make sense (it means the deep sea!), and it is grammatically incorrect (the Latin noun mare is in the neuter gender and the grammatically correct name should be Mariprofundum). Unfortunately, this error was not corrected by the List Editor of the IJSEM.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) PV-1 = ATCC BAA-1020 = DSM 23021.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: EF493243.
Etymology: L. n. ferrum, iron; Gr. adj. oxus, acid or sour and in combined words indicating oxygen; N.L. v. oxydare, to make acid, to oxidize; N.L. part. adj. ferrooxydans, iron-oxidizing.
