Etymology: L. n. mare, the sea; Gr. adj. xanthos, yellow; Gr. fem. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Marixanthomonas, a marine yellow monad.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. ophiurae, of Ophiura, a genus of invertebrates belonging to the class Ophiuroidea, the source of isolation of the type strain.
