Etymology: L. masc. n. funis, string; L. fem. adj. suffix -formis (from L. n. forma, figure, shape, appearance), -like, in the shape of; N.L. fem. adj. funiformis, string-shaped, referring to the cell shape.

Etymology: M.L. fem. adj. rupellensis, referring to La Rochelle, the site of isolation of the type strain.
