Meniscus glaucopis Irgens 1977, species. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 29398.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: GU269545.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. glaucopis (from Gr. adj. glaukôpis) gleaming-eyed (an epithet of the warlike goddess Athena), perhaps a reference to the presence of refractile gas vacuoles.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).
Original publication: IRGENS (R.L.): Meniscus, a new genus of aerotolerant, gas-vacuolated bacteria. International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology, 1977, 27, 38-43.

Note: The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain shows an unexpected affiliation with a deep branch in ¤ Bacteroidales (80% similarity against ¤ Cytophaga hutchinsonii).
