Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; Gr. adj. mikros, small; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. methanomicrococcus, a small methane-forming coccus.
