Methanoplanus Wildgruber et al. 1984 (complete authorship reads: Wildgruber, Thomm and Stetter), gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Methanoplanaceae Wildgruber et al. 1984).
Type species: ¤ Methanoplanus limicola Wildgruber et al. 1984.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. masc. adj. planus, flat, plane; N.L. masc. n. Methanoplanus, the methane (-producing) plate.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 14. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1984, 34, 270-271.
Effective publication: WILDGRUBER (G.), THOMM (M.) KÖNIG (H.), OBER (K.), RICCHIUTO (T.) and STETTER (K.O.): Methanoplanus limicola, a plate-shaped methanogen representing a novel family, the Methanoplanaceae. Arch. Microbiol., 1982, 132, 31-36.
Validation List no. 14 in IJSEM Online - Effective publication Online

Note: Initial 16S rRNA-DNA hybridization experiments indicated that Methanoplanus Wildgruber et al. 1984 should be placed as a separate family, the ¤ Methanoplanaceae Wildgruber et al. 1984, within the order ¤ Methanomicrobiales Balch and Wolfe 1981. However, later 16S rRNA sequence comparisons indicated that Methanoplanus species are closely related to members of the genera ¤ Methanomicrobium Balch and Wolfe 1981, ¤ Methanogenium Romesser et al. 1981, and ¤ Methanoculleus Maestrojuán et al. 1990, which all belong to the family ¤ Methanomicrobiaceae Balch and Wolfe 1981. Therefore, the genus ¤ Methanoplanus should be placed within this family and the family ¤ Methanoplanaceae Wildgruber et al. 1984 should no longer be recognized.
