Synonym: "Methylocystis" Whittenbury et al. 1970.
Etymology: N.L. n. methylum (from French méthyle, back-formation from French méthylène, coined from Gr. n. methu, wine and Gr. n. hulê, wood), the methyl group; N.L. pref. methylo-, pertaining to the methyl radical; N.L. fem. n. cystis (from Gr. fem. n. kustis), the bladder and in biology, a cyst; N.L. fem. n. Methylocystis, methyl cyst.

Etymology: Gr. neut. n. bruon,moss; NL. fem. adj. philus (from Gr. fem. adj. phlilê), loving; N.L. fem adj. bryophila, moss-loving, intended to mean moss-associated.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. heyeri, of Heyer, named in honour of the German microbiologist Jürgen Heyer, for his highly enthusiastic research on methanotrophic bacteria and his contributions to increasing our knowledge on methanotroph diversity and ecology.
