Etymology: N.L. pref. methyl-, pertaining to the methyl radical, from N.L. n. methylum (from Fr. adj. méthyle) the methyl group; L. masc. adj. profundus, of the deep; N.L. masc. n. Methyloprofundus, a methyl-using bacterium from the deep sea.
