Pasteurella multocida subsp. gallicida Mutters et al. 1985, subsp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 51689= CCUG 17978 = CIP 103285 = NCTC 10204.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AF294412.
Etymology: L. n. gallus, a cock; L. suff. -cida (from L. v. caedo, to cut or kill), murderer, killer; N.L. n. gallicida, killer of cock, referring to pathogenicity for poultry.
Valid publication: MUTTERS (R.), IHM (P.), POHL (S.), FREDERIKSEN (W.) and MANNHEIM (W.): Reclassification of the genus Pasteurella Trevisan 1887 on the basis of deoxyribonucleic acid homology, with proposals for the new species Pasteurella dagmatis, Pasteurella canis, Pasteurella stomatis, Pasteurella anatis, and Pasteurella langaa. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1985, 35, 309-322.

Notes:
1 The type strain (NCTC 10204) of Pasteurella multocida subsp. gallicida is not the type strain (NCTC 10322) of Pasteurella gallicida (Burrill 1883) Buchanan 1925 (Approved Lists 1980). Moreover, the name Pasteurella gallicida is placed on the list of rejected names (See: ¤ Pasteurella gallicida). Therefore, Pasteurella multocida subsp. gallicida is a new subspecies, not a new combination.
2 The subspecific epithet gallinicida (L. n. gallina, a hen, not gallus, a cock, not Gallus, name of a genus of birds) seems better than gallicida.
