Type species: ¤ Pelistega europaea Vandamme et al. 1998.
Etymology: Gr. n. peleia, pigeon; Gr. fem. n. stegê (or stega), roof, chamber, house; N.L. fem. n. Pelistega, refers to the bacteria living in pigeons.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. europaea, of or belonging to Europe, because the first collection of strains was isolated in different European countries.
