Picrophilus Schleper et al. 1996 (complete authorship reads: Schleper, Zillig and Pühler), gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Picrophilales Cavalier-Smith 2002; type genus of the family ¤ Picrophilaceae Schleper et al. 1996).
Type species: ¤ Picrophilus oshimae Schleper et al. 1996.
Etymology: Gr. adj. pikros, pointed, sharp, acid; N.L. masc. adj. philus (from Gr. masc. adj. philos), friend, loving; N.L. masc. n. Picrophilus, acid-loving organism.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. oshimae, of Oshima, referring to the Japanese biochemist Tairo Oshima.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. torridus, dried up, torrid, referring to dry hot soil where the strain was isolated.
