Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Pricia, arbitrary name derived from the acronym for the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC), where the type species was first isolated and examined.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. antarctica, southern and, by extension, pertaining to Antarctic, the geographical origin of the type strain.
