Propionispora Biebl et al. 2001, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Propionispora vibrioides Biebl et al. 2001.
Etymology: N.L. n. acidum propionicum, propionic acid; Gr. n. spora, a seed, and in biology a spore; N.L. fem. n. Propionispora, a propionic-acid-forming, spore-forming organism.

Propionispora hippei Abou-Zeid et al. 2004, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) KS = ATCC BAA-665 = DSM 15287.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ508927.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. hippei, of Hippe, named after Dr. Hans-H Hippe, DSMZ, for his numerous contributions to the cultivation and taxonomy of anaerobes.
Valid publication: ABOU-ZEID (D.M.), BIEBL (H.), SPRÖER (C.) and MÜLLER (R.J.): Propionispora hippei sp. nov., a novel Gram-negative, spore-forming anaerobe that produces propionic acid. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2004, 54, 951-954.

Propionispora vibrioides Biebl et al. 2001, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) FKBS1 = DSM 13305 = JCM 17185.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ279802.
Etymology: L. v. vibro, to set in tremulous motion, move to and fro, vibrate; N.L. n. vibrio, that which vibrates, and also a bacterial genus name of bacteria possessing a curved rod shape (Vibrio); L. suff. -oides (from Gr. suff. -eides, from Gr. n. eidos, that which is seen, form, shape, figure), ressembling, similar; N.L. fem. adj. vibrioides, vibrio-shaped.

Note: At the time of publication, the type strain was not deposited in two publicly accessible service collections in different countries, and Propionispora vibrioides Biebl et al. 2001 was not validly published [Rules 27(3) and 30]. However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Propionispora vibrioides Biebl et al. 2001 is now considered to be validly published, since deposit in a second culture collection in a different country has been documented.
