Rhodocista Kawasaki et al. 1994, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Rhodocista centenaria Kawasaki et al. 1994.
Etymology: Gr. n. rhodon, the rose; L. fem. n. cista, a basket; N.L. fem. n. Rhodocista, the rose basket.
Recommended three-letter abbreviation: Rcs. (see the file ¤ "Three-letter code for abbreviations of generic names").

Rhodocista centenaria Kawasaki et al. 1994, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ATCC 43720= DSM 9894 = IAM 14193 = IFO (now NBRC) 16667 = JCM 21060.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: D12701.
Etymology: L. fem. adj. centenaria, relating to a hundred, to commemorate a century after the publication of the first description of a phototrophic bacterium in 1887.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 48. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1994, 44, 182-183.
Effective publication: KAWASAKI (H.), HOSHINO (Y.), KURAISHI (Y.) and YAMASATO (K.): Rhodocista centenaria gen. nov., sp. nov., a cyst-forming anoxygenic photosynthetic bacterium and its phylogenetic position in the Proteobacteria alpha group. J. Gen. Appl. Microbiol., 1992, 38, 541-551.
Validation List no. 48 in IJSEM Online - Effective publication Online

Note: Rhodocista centenaria and ¤ Rhodospirillum centenum have been validly published by announcement in Validation List no. 48. These two names have the same type strain (ATCC 43720 and the same priority number (priority number 2). Therefore they are homotypic synonyms and no priority can be established. So, Rhodocista centenaria is a new species not a new combination as cited in the Validation List no. 48 and the correct citation of this name is Rhodocista centenaria Kawasaki et al. 1994, sp. nov.

= ¤ Rhodospirillum centenum Favinger et al. 1994, sp. nov.

Notes:
1 Rhodocista centenaria Kawasaki et al. 1994, type strain: IAM 14193 = ATCC 43720(Validation List no. 48, priority number 2) is a homotypic synonym of Rhodospirillum centenum Favinger et al. 1994, type strain: ATCC 43720(Validation List no. 48, priority number 2).
2 In the ASM News [1] and in a Letter to the Editor of the IJSEM [2], Gest and Favinger have presented a list of objections to using the name Rhodocista centenaria Kawasaki et al. 1994. However, Rhodospirillum centenum Favinger et al. 1994 and Rhodocista centenaria Kawasaki et al. 1994 are homotypic synonyms and neither is the earlier (senior) synonym [3]. So, the name which is to be used is this which is correct in the opinion of a bacteriologist.
