Rikenella Collins et al. 1985, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Rikenellaceae Krieg et al. 2012).
Type species: ¤ Rikenella microfusus (Kaneuchi and Mitsuoka 1978) Collins et al. 1985.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Rikenella, named after the RIKEN-Institute, Japan, where the organisms were originally isolated.

Etymology: Gr. adj. mikros, small; L. n. fusus, a spindle; N.L. n. microfusus (nominative in apposition), a small spindle (referring to cellular morphology).
