Etymology: L. masc. n. rivus, creek or small river; L. suff. -cola (from L. masc. or fem. n. incola), inhabitant, dweller; N.L. masc. n. Rivicola, river dweller.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. pingtungensis, pertaining to Pingtung, a town in Southern Taiwan.
