Sarcobium Drozanski 1991, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Sarcobium lyticum Drozanski 1991.
Etymology: Gr. n. sarx sarkos, flesh; Gr. n. bios, life; N.L. neut. n. Sarcobium, that which lives in the sarcode or flesh [cytoplasm].
Valid publication: DROZANSKI (W.J.): Sarcobium lyticum gen. nov., sp. nov., an obligate intracellular bacterial parasite of small free-living amoebae. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1991, 41, 82-87.

¤ Legionella Brenner et al. 1979 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note: Hookey et al. 1996 propose to transfer ¤ Sarcobium lyticum Drozanski 1991 (the type species of the genus Sarcobium) to the genus ¤ Legionella as ¤ Legionella lytica (Drozanski 1991) Hookey et al. 1996, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Sarcobium to ¤ Legionella.

Sarcobium lyticum Drozanski 1991, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) L2 = PCM 2298. In the absence of cultivation in pure culture, the description in the paper by Drozanski 1991 forms the nomenclatural type (Rules 18a and 18f).
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X97364.
Etymology: N.L. neut. adj. lyticum (from Gr. neut. adj. lutikon), able to loosen, able to dissolve.
Valid publication: DROZANSKI (W.J.): Sarcobium lyticum gen. nov., sp. nov., an obligate intracellular bacterial parasite of small free-living amoebae. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1991, 41, 82-87.
