Silicibacter Petursdottir and Kristjansson 1999, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Silicibacter lacuscaerulensis Petursdottir and Kristjansson 1999.
Etymology: L. n. silex -icis, any hard stone found in fields, here silica; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Silicibacter, a rod isolated from a silica-rich geothermal lake.

Note: Yi et al. 2007 propose to transfer ¤ Silicibacter lacuscaerulensis Petursdottir and Kristjansson 1999 (the type species of the genus Silicibacter) to the genus ¤ Ruegeria as ¤ Ruegeria lacuscaerulensis (Petursdottir and Kristjansson 1999) Yi et al. 2007, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Silicibacter to ¤ Ruegeria.

Silicibacter Petursdottir and Kristjansson 1999.

Note: According to Muramatsu et al. 2007, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis suggests that the genera ¤ Ruegeria and Silicibacter are closely related and should be integrated into one genus (i.e. ¤ Ruegeria Uchino et al. 1999 which has priority over Silicibacter Petursdottir and Kristjansson 1999). However, their differential phenotypic properties do not support this unification. Consequently the authors retain the two species of Silicibacter in their paper.

Etymology: L. n. lacus, lake; L. adj. caeruleus, blue; N.L. masc. adj. lacuscaerulensis, pertaining to the blue lake.

Silicibacter pomeroyi González et al. 2003, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) DSS-3 = ATCC 700808= DSM 15171.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AF098491.
Etymology: N.L. masc. gen. n. pomeroyi, of Lawrence R. Pomeroy, marine microbial ecologist who first elucidated the role of bacteria in the marine food web.
