Type species: ¤ Sporocytophaga myxococcoides (Krzemieniewska 1933) Stanier 1940 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. spora, a seed, and in biology a spore; N.L. fem. n. Cytophaga, genus name of a bacterium; N.L. fem. n. Sporocytophaga, sporing Cytophaga.

Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Myxococcus, genus name of a bacterium; L. suff. -oides (from Gr. suff. eides from Gr. n. eidos, that which is seen, form, shape, figure), resembling, similar; N.L. fem. adj. myxococcoides, resembling Myxococcus.
