Type species: ¤ Starkeya novella (Starkey 1934) Kelly et al. 2000.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Starkeya, named after Robert L. Starkey, who made important contributions to the study of soil microbiology and sulfur biochemistry.
Valid publication: KELLY (D.P.), McDONALD (I.R.) and WOOD (A.P.): Proposal for the reclassification of Thiobacillus novellus as Starkeya novella gen. nov., comb. nov., in the α-subclass of the Proteobacteria. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2000, 50, 1797-1802.

Starkeya koreensis Im et al. 2006, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) Jip08 = IAM 15215 = JCM 21669 = KCTC 12212 = NBRC 100963.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB166877.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. koreensis, pertaining to Korea, from where the novel micro-organism was isolated.
Valid publication: IM (W.T.), ASLAM (Z.), LEE (M.), TEN (L.N.), YANG (D.C.) and LEE (S.T.): Starkeya koreensis sp. nov., isolated from rice straw. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2006, 56, 2409-2414.
