Type species: ¤ Starkeya novella (Starkey 1934) Kelly et al. 2000.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Starkeya, named after Robert L. Starkey, who made important contributions to the study of soil microbiology and sulfur biochemistry.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. koreensis, pertaining to Korea, from where the novel micro-organism was isolated.
