Type genus: "Stigonema" Agardh 1824.
Synonym: "Stigonematales" Geitler 1925.
Etymology: N.L. neut. n. "Stigonema", type genus of the order; suff. -ales, ending denoting an order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Stigonematales, the "Stigonema" order.

1 The type genus "Stigonema" does not appear on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names, and has not been validly published since 1 January 1980. Consequently, Stigonematales Cavalier-Smith 2002 is illegitimate.
