Type species: ¤ Subtercola boreus Männistö et al. 2000.
Etymology: L. prep. subter, below, underneath; L. suf. -cola (from L. n. incola), inhabitant; N.L. masc. n. subtercola, the one who lives underneath.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. boreus, northern, referring to the boreal groundwater aquifer in Finland, from which the organism was isolated.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. pratensis, growing or found in meadows/grassland.

Note: While the paper by Behrendt et al. 2002 was being reviewed, Evtushenko et al. 2001 [1] proposed a novel genus, ¤ Agreia, which showed chemotaxonomic features corresponding to those of Subtercola pratensis. As a consequence, a necessary reclassification of Subtercola pratensis is in preparation [2].
