Etymology: L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. fem. n. sphaera, sphere; N.L. fem. n. Sulfurisphaera, sulfur-metabolizing spherical cells from sulfataric fields.

Note: The Latin word sphaera is in the feminine gender. So, according to Rule 65 (2), the generic name Sulfurisphaera is in the feminine gender, not in the masculine gender as mentioned in the paper by Kurosawa et al. 1998.
