Synergistes Allison et al. 1993, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Synergistales Jumas-Bilak et al. 2009; type genus of the family ¤ Synergistaceae Jumas-Bilak et al. 2009).
Type species: ¤ Synergistes jonesii Allison et al. 1993.
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. synergistes (arbitrarily derived from English n. synergist), a co-worker.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. jonesii, of Jones, named in honor of Raymond J. Jones, the Australian scientist who identified the activity of this bacterium in detoxification of 3,4-DHP and inoculated the rumens of cattle with this organism to solve animal intoxication problems when Leucaena leucocephala is grazed.
