Tannerella Sakamoto et al. 2002, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Tannerella forsythia corrig. (Tanner et al. 1986) Sakamoto et al. 2002.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Tannerella, named after the American microbiologist Anne C. R. Tanner, for her contributions to research on periodontal disease.

Basonym: ¤ Bacteroides forsythus Tanner et al. 1986.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. forsythia, pertaining to the Forsyth Dental Center, where the species was first isolated.

Note: The original spelling of the specific epithet, forsythus, was corrected to forsythensis by Sakamoto et al. 2002. In a Request for an Opinion, Maiden et al. [1] requested that the original adjectival form of the specific epithet be conserved, and these authors proposed the name "Tannerella forsythia" corrig.
At its meetings in July 2005, at the IUMS Congress in San Francisco, the Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes ruled that, on the transfer of ¤ Bacteroides forsythus Tanner et al. 1986 to the genus Tannerella Sakamoto et al. 2002, the adjectival form of the specific epithet is to be conserved [2]. Consequently the name of the new combination must be Tannerella forsythia, not Tannerella forsythensis as cited in the paper by Sakamoto et al. 2002 [3].
