Etymology: Gr. fem. n. thalassa, sea; L. masc. n. bacillus, rod; N.L. masc. n. Thalassobacillus, rod from the sea.

Etymology: L. masc. gen. n. cyri, of Cyrus, named after Cyrus, the first king of Persia, where the type strain was isolated.
